Born June 17th 1939 in Warsaw.
From 1955 to 1959 studied physics at Warsaw University and attended lectures on cinema at the Institute of Art at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (1956-57). In 1959 he enrolled at the Department of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow.
In 1960 he started studying the film direction at the Lodz Film School (grad.1966). Made his first films in Amateur Film Club of Warsaw University in the 50-ies. Since 1966 he has directed many documentaries, features for cinema and TV, in Poland and abroad. He writes or co-writes scripts for his own films (some of them were published in 4 volumes in Poland and in 2 volumes in Italy also in Germany, Russia and Hungary, Czech and India).
K. Zanussi is also stage and opera director. From 1974 to 1981 Vice-Chairman of the Polish Film-makers Association.
From 1979 chief manager and director of “TOR” Film Unit (now “TOR” Film Studio), in frames of which he has produced a great number of important films, among them the work of his friend, the late Krzysztof Kieslowski. (in 1993-94 co-produced his trilogy “Three Coulours: Blue. White. Red).
Has served as President of FERA (Federation Europeenne des Realisateurs de l’Audiovisuel) and Eurovisioni. Since 1992 professor of Silesian University in Katowice. Member of Polish PEN-Club.Doctor Honoris Causa of WGIK Moscow, The National University of Drama and Cinematography „I.L. Caragiale” (Bucarest), European Humanities University (Minsk), Bulgarian University (Sophia), University of Film and Television (Sankt Petersburg), Catholic University of Lublin.
